Recently as part of the Thamesmead Festival, Crossness Pumping Station in Abbey Wood held an extra steaming day where they opened to the public and operated their machines. Crossness is a 150 year old Victorian pumping station. Whilst it is no longer used to clean the sewage water of the Thames, it is still a building of beauty and spectacular marvel, being in a partial restored state. I took along my son to show him what happens after you flush the toilet. He really enjoyed himself being the youngest person to operate the steam engines, and he was chuffed with his certificate!

And as a wedding photographer, Crossness Pumping Station would make an ideal backdrop for a styled shoot (winks!)

Crossness Pumping is operated by volunteers and is open at limited times during the year, usually on select Sundays – you can find their opening hours here.
