Sometimes I get asked the reason why my flash is pointed the wrong way! Here are two examples of flash during a photo. The first one is taken with the flash facing forward directly on the subject (giraffe). Note that the giraffe is overexposed (as it is closest to the camera) and the background (sofa) is significantly darker. There are also dark shadows. In the second photo, the flash has been bounced off the ceiling so that the light is diffused and much softer. Everything is evenly lit (giraffe, table and background) .
