Like Lost the TV series – a group of strangers from across the UK crash landed on a lush densely vegetated island in the Atlantic Ocean. Well, when I say crash landed, the desent into the runway is certainly not for beginners! Although the runway was expanded in 2000, it is still a small runway. Sometimes flights into the airport are rerouted to the Canary Islands if the weather is too bad.
The strangers went their separate ways to enjoy their time on the island, eating octopus in celebration of Madeira’s Independence Day on 1 December, and viewing the Christmas decorations in Funchal etc etc.
Soon it was time to leave the island of Madeira, but the island wasn’t done with them yet.
Due to the mathematical planning of the Others – let’s call them Spanish air controllers – the passengers of Easyjet 8936 were destined not to leave the island and were taken to the other side of the island (Machico) , some for 2 days, others for 3, and the rest 4. Whilst the strangers tried to make sense of their plight – trying to contact their family via the island’s airways, the island was battered by the smoke monster – wind, rain and clouds.
Will the strangers get off the island? Tune in for the next exciting installment….
To round up this tale of rest and adventure, we and the travellers did get back safely to Gatwick yesterday. More photos to follow….
The details:
Wi-fi: Madeira has free wi-fi spots over the island, which is handy as most hotels don’t have wi-fi. Some hotels do have a computer in the reception either free to use or at a cost.
